This position is not dependant on location and will require routine travel across Canada.

Executive Director

Reporting to the Board of Directors (Board), the Executive Director (ED) has overall strategic and operational responsibility for Canadian’s for Fair Access to Medical Marijuana (CFAMM)’s staff, programs, expansion, and execution of its mission while keeping medical cannabis patients at the center of everything we do. The ED is responsible for establishing and executing major goals and objectives for the organization. They provide leadership, direction, and guidance for CFAMM’s activities, while analyzing and evaluating the effectiveness of all organization operations. They develop and maintain organizational structure and effective personnel including volunteers if required, coordinate major activities through subordinates and appraise assigned personnel. They implement the strategic plan and policies as approved by the Board. They are the lead spokesperson for CFAMM to other agencies, community and civic organizations, donors, funders and supporters, and the general public.

TYPE OF POSITION – Full time permanent

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Strategic Planning and Management
  • Direct and oversee the planning, implementation, and evaluation of the organization’s short- and long-term strategic plans, programs, and services.
  • Oversee the planning, implementation, execution, and evaluation of special projects.
  • Provide leadership to organization personnel through effective objective setting, delegation, and communication.
  • Oversee the development of an operational plan which incorporates goals and objectives that work towards the strategic direction of the organization.
  • Oversee the efficient and effective day-to-day operation of the organization
  • Ensure effective systems to track scaling progress, and regularly evaluate program components, to measure successes that can be effectively communicated to the board, funders, and other constituents.
  • Create a technological solution to allow for easy board engagement.
  • Disseminate pertinent information to staff and/or volunteers.
  • Actively engage and energize CFAMM’s volunteers, board members, event committees, partnering organizations, and funders.
  • Ensure that operations are implemented and conducted in accordance with CFAMM’s by-laws, its mission statement, and any approved Board policies.

Board Governance:

  • Attend meetings of the Board and attend (or designate another staff, as appropriate) Board committee meetings.
  • Communicate effectively with the Board and providing, in a timely and accurate manner, all information necessary for the Board to function properly and to make informed decisions
  • Working with committees, draft policies for Board approval and prepare procedures to implement the organizational policies; review existing policies on an annual basis and recommend changes to the Board, as appropriate.
  • Provide staff support to the Board by preparing meeting agenda (in consultation with the Chair) and supporting materials.
  • Report to the Board on activities and concerns regarding the operation of CFAMM on a monthly (or “as needed”) basis.
  • See that the board is kept fully informed on the condition of the organization and all important factors influencing it.
  • Keep current on Board recruitment.

Fundraising:

  • Work with the Board and relevant committees to establish a strategic, multi-year financial growth and sustainability plan for CFAMM.
  • Develop and provide direction and leadership in the identification, cultivation and solicitation of major gifts, planned giving, large grant writing, online giving and corporate and foundation strategic partnerships.
  • Develop a fundraising plan with specific targets. Achieving targets will be a critical measure of success.
  • Manage and coordinate staff, volunteer, and professional relationships in support of fundraising events, major/planned gift fundraising activities, and campaigns.
  • Monitor and evaluate all fundraising activities to ensure goals are being achieved; identify and correct problems related to areas such as funding, expenditures, and related matters.
  • Expand our donor base by cultivating positive and mutually beneficial relationships.
  • Identify and expand revenue generating and fundraising activities to support existing program operations and future program expansion.
  • Create, manage, and develop relationships with corporate, foundation and CSR forums aiming to maximize awareness about CFAMM among influencers and senior stakeholders.
  • Prepare funding proposals, grant applications, and related reports to corporations, foundations, and governments.
  • Keep up to date with current fundraising and social trends, current events, and political changes, CRA guidelines and updates by participating in professional organizations and networking with the business sector.

Communications:

  • Act as the lead spokesperson for organization.
  • Working with the appropriate parties, develop and implement an annual communications plan; develop an effective social media strategy.
  • Oversee all aspects of communications—from web presence to external relations with the goal of creating a stronger brand and raising CFAMM’s visibility.
  • Create, update, and oversee the distribution of promotional materials for CFAMM.
  • Meet with community members and organizations to tell the CFAMM story and to gain financial support.
  • Encourage and build strong and positive partnerships with community agencies, individuals and government.
  • Develop and execute a PR strategy, including representing CFAMM through media appearances and interviews to increase CFAMM’s visibility.
  • Maintain ongoing communications and stewardship of our donors.
  • Oversee timely and effective communications to members.

Human Resources:

  • Foster a healthy organizational culture; encourage and value diversity.
  • Ensure that appropriate salary and wage structures are maintained.
  • Ensure that job descriptions are current.
  • Conduct performance appraisals as required.
  • Formulate and implement corrective action as needed.
  • Assist with Board development efforts, including Board member orientation and training.

Financial:

  • Maintain full awareness of the complete financial, statistical, and accounting records of the organization.
  • Ensure that operating results established in the annual budget are achieved and the control of operating expenses within budget.
  • Ensure the accuracy, integrity, and timeliness of all financial accounting and reporting.
  • Ensure the preparation of budgets and forecasts for board approval.
  • Report on the financial affairs of CFAMM to the Board as required.
  • Negotiate contracts and agreements within Board-approved limits.
  • Maintain an effective and cost-efficient office environment.
  • Perform other duties as requested and required.

Qualifications & Education:

  • College or University degree in a related field.
  • Track record of effectively leading and regionally and/or nationally scaling a performance- and outcomes-based organization and staff; ability to point to specific examples of having developed and operationalized strategies that have taken an organization to the next stage of growth.
  • Strong marketing, public relations, and fundraising experience with the ability to engage a wide range of stakeholders and cultures.
  • Knowledge of all federal and provincial legislation applicable to voluntary sector organizations including employment standards, human rights, occupational health and safety, charities, taxation, etc.
  • Knowledge of leadership and management principles as they relate to non-profit/ voluntary organizations
  • Knowledge of current community challenges and opportunities relating to the mission of the organization
  • Knowledge of financial management
  • Knowledge of project management
